Comment(by Anna):

 I just got ext3 corruption on an XO 1.5 running os206. In Gnome, I
 mounted a newly formatted 4GB ext3 drive, got the kernel source from git,
 and used xconfig (that's what I was doing in a window manager). When I
 switched to single user mode to compile the kernel, I got a bunch of ext3
 errors.

 Yes, this is a different USB drive from my initial report. So I could try
 compiling the kernel again, I used my desktop to lay down a fresh ext3
 format on that drive, then did everything in single user mode on the XO
 1.5.  No ext3 errors.

 Different XO hardware platform, different USB drive, but same ext3 issue.
