Comment(by Quozl):

 The ''Digital'' mixer control only appears once a capture has been
 started. Test: boot, monitor amixer, then start arecord.

 The ''PCM'' mixer control only appears once a playback stream has been
 started. Test: boot, monitor amixer, then start aplay.

 Perhaps it has something to do with the power saving modes we have
 selected.

 The kernel on os121 has these set:
 {{{
 CONFIG_SND_HDA_INTEL=y
 CONFIG_SND_HDA_HWDEP=y
 CONFIG_SND_HDA_RECONFIG=y
 CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CONEXANT=y
 CONFIG_SND_HDA_GENERIC=y
 CONFIG_SND_HDA_POWER_SAVE=y
 CONFIG_SND_HDA_POWER_SAVE_DEFAULT=5
 }}}

 The ''Digital'' mixer control appears to be an additional attenuator in
 the path from the microphone to user-space during a capture. Both it and
 the ''Capture'' control determine the amplitude of the captured waveform.
