 Daniel, one option is to use early_printk() to get output before the full
 console system is running. You can enable it with earlyprintk=ttyS0 and
 then hack kernel/printk.c:printk() to just call early_printk(). I haven't
 tested this yet but I'm fairly certain it will work and let you see how
 far into the boot we're getting.
