If I have an internal SD card inserted in a laptop, and try to boot from
an OS30 image installed on an external SD, the boot either fails or
 doesn't do the right thing.

If there is a valid OS on the internal SD card, it will be used as the OS.
If there isn't, the boot will fail.

This is due to the OS30 boot/olpc.fth explicitly specifying /dev/mmcblk0p2
as the root partition. If there is an internal SD card in place, the
kernel thinks that it is /dev/mmcblk0. If there is no internal SD card
in place, the external SD card is /dev/mmcblk0.
