 I have an XO-1.5 B1 laptop, running os27 and Q3A10b firmware.

It hangs on boot, at around the fourth or fifth dot. Eventually, the
screen turns black, showing a blinking underline cursor.

As cjb suspected, the problem is the fsck of the root partition.

My laptop got into this state. When I switched to the console (Ctl-
Alt-F1), I noticed that it had bailed and was waiting for user input
(either run fsck or ctl-D). Nothing I typed had any effect, as that
terminal is console output only in F11 (why ???). Typed characters were
 echoed on the screen, however.

I was, however, able to run fsck by switching back to the black screen
with a blinking cursor (Ctl-Alt-F2) and typing "fsck<CR>"
followed by lots of <CR> to advance through the errors indicated on the
console screen. Nothing typed on this screen is echoed (either on the
screen or the console screen). Eventually, I was done and able to reboot
by typing "reboot" on the black screen.

The OS actually came back up OK after all this (I had turned it off with
the power button, then turned it off with the power button again while
 fsck'ing from the first time...).

We do need to make the initial fsck run "-y" automatically.
