 Yes, that idea works. To test:
 {{{
 $ su
 # echo 11.0.0 > /etc/olpc-release
 }}}
 (filed as #9533)

 Then the updater will not try to use the latest Etoys version but the one
 from http://etoys.laptop.org/xo/11.0 which is 108, the same as is already
 in os32.
