 OK, when I do "su" then "init 3" I enter the full-screen root login window
 thing.

 Then I do "yum update" and get an error:
 Error: Cannot retrieve metalink for repository: fedora. Please verify its
 path and try again.

 I did some looking about, found info suggesting "ifup eth0" but that fails
 with this error:
 configuration for eth0 not found.

 My smart friend tells me that ifup expects a file in
 /etc/network/interfaces to operate, and /etc/network does not exist.

 So I guess I need further instructions, please, thank you.
