Comment(by cjb):

 Which leads me to two possibilities:

  * outputting *anything at all* over serial is sufficient to avoid the
 hang
  * one of the functions I'm printing from is causing the hang, and the
 delay of printing is sufficient to avoid the hang

 The obvious next test is to cut down on the amount of output and see if we
 get a hang.  If I cut out the output completely with this kernel (loglevel
 1), the hang remains.
