Comment(by dsd):

 Chris points out that it might not be silently failing, because the
 console log level is so low we wouldn't even be seeing error messages over
 serial.

 John, please run "dmesg -n 7" before your test. (there will be a lot of
 info spewed to serial on every suspend/resume though, might slow it down
 considerably?)
