 The latest info I have about this is that some of the bits that feed the
 16-color lookup table (the first 0x10 "attribute" registers) are being
 ignored.  So, for example, color index 7, which should point to light
 gray, is instead being interpreted as index 5, which is magenta.  The
 exact "ignore mask" changes from boot to boot.

 There is a "pixel plane enable" register that explicitly has this effect,
 but that register is not causing the problem.  The value in that register
 is correct, with all planes enabled.

 More analysis is required.  Sigh.
