Comment:

 I don't run from a VT unless Terminal is not working.  But in Terminal I
 rarely run as olpc, and almost never use sudo;  in Terminal I normally
 issue an explicit 'su' (to retain the environmental variables from userid
 olpc), then do all my work as userid zero.  In this working environment, I
 need the same setup that a VT session would need.
