 I doubt if ~/.sugar/debug had ever been useful for telepathy debugging on
 the XO.

 The reason .xsession modification does not work is due to dbus-launch
 starting up before .xsession is sourced.

 I'm attaching a patch to read .xsession before dbus-launch is called. Let
 me know if it works for you.
