 But with the removal of console=ttyS0,115200 the kernel should no longer
 be a client of the kernel.  lsof shows no process has a file descriptor
 open to /dev/ttyS0.  /proc/cmdline doesn't have the console=ttyS0,115200
 phrase any more.

 Could someone with a nearby kernel build environment try that, or provide
 a corresponding kernel for me to try?  (Or spend the time explaining how I
 can set up a kernel build environment).
