 I feel strongly that the solution needs to based on physical information
 about the slot rather than guessing.  The latter is unstable and cannot be
 described to customers (in problem situations) without handwaving.

 If the SD driver doesn't export the physical identity of the slot in some
 form, that is a bona fide bug that needs to be addressed squarely.
