 All I've done to PATH is to add subdirectories for useful scripts.  And
 I've never touched DISPLAY - its value is whatever the system has set.

 You say that these two are not properly set.  So far, I haven't been able
 to figure out what's wrong.  Please - give me a clue as to what you think
 is not right with them:
