 analysis of 9634-1.tcpdump:
  * an active connection from port 46141 to port 5223 on 206.192.23.220 is
 the jabber server, which proves connectivity,
  * no evidence of a connection attempt by the ''Software update'' feature.

 analysis of a known working system:
  * a DNS lookup is made for wiki.laptop.org,
  * a connection is made to 18.85.2.169 (wiki.laptop.org),
  * HTTP data transfer ensues.

 interim conclusion: the issue is not kernel or network related.  i agree,
 sugar shell logs needed.
