 Triage.

 Workaround is to "xset -dpms", last tested on os36.

 Symptom can be immediately triggered using "xset dpms force standby" or
 "xset dpms force suspend", last tested on os39.

 The grey effect appears to be bit rot in the display when updates cease.

 Time before occurrence can be reduced by reducing the Gnome
 ''System->Preferences->Power Management'' option ''Put display to sleep
 when inactive for''.

 There is a risk that some activity or application may intentionally
 trigger display suspend or standby via X.

 Agreed, low priority, not WONTFIX.
