 I think this is a regression since the A2 days:

 On boot, /sys/devices/platform/dcon/freeze always reads "1" even when the
 dcon is not frozen (and has not been frozen during boot).

 You can see this because the boot animation starts during verbose boot.
 It's coded to only start when the dcon was frozen during boot (i.e. pretty
 boot mode).

 Resetting it to 0 and then 1 again successfully causes a dcon freeze.

 To reproduce this easily, chmod a-x /usr/bin/boot-anim-start (then the
 boot anim won't mess with the dcon during boot, so you can see the
 incorrect value with your own eyes)
