 I just live with this bug.  Auto-connection is erratic, but manual
 connection is always attainable with one or two clicks.  It's a nuisance.
 I don't know how to diagnose/debug it.  I think it got a bit better when I
 reconfigured my WRT54G wireless router to use WPA2 instead of WPA security
 mode.
