 I also looked into the via-agp driver, even though I'm not sure how it
 fits into all of the above, if at all.

 The probe code seems to look for a PCI host bridge that has the AGP
 capability. None of our 7 host bridges have that capability, so I'm not
 sure how (or if) to proceed.
