Comment:

 For what it's worth, the driving factor behind using debian-installer to
 create the old initramfs was that, at the time, no one involved in the
 problem knew how to get an initramfs based on the Fedora python packages
 down to a reasonable size. Has this situation (or the desire for Python in
 the initramfs) changed? If not, how might we proceed?
