Comment(by skierpage):

 Release 8.2.0 has /etc/olpc-release which contains "8.2", which is almost
 the release number.  Software update uses get_release_version() in
 bitfrost/update which reads this file to determine the release version and
 comments 'a two- or three-part dotted version number, like "8.1".'

 So this function/file is close but not alas quite right for the first
 release in a stream.  I mentioned it anyway in
