 the redetection message happens, sometimes, but not all the time.

 new info:  there is a very high correlation between enabling console
 printk messages and the problem going away.  with no console dmesg output,
 i can reproduce it almost every time using the 'type a character at a VT
 screen' method.  with full console printk, i almost can't make it happen.
