Comment:

 Which part of this is undesirable?  I think it's all expected behavior --
 it's possible to go to sleep with a network connection open, and I suppose
 with a ping every second there is a window of:

 ICMP request
 ICMP reply
 <suspend>
 next outbound ping doesn't happen due to suspend, hence no wakeup event
 because no reply will come
 <manual wakeup>
 pings start again
 }}}
