 Ok, I apologize for being a bit verbose, but it was a late night hacking
 session, and I can get that way.  Anyway, I don't think it's *that* bad.

 Thanks for the tip.  The initial Ubuntu install was successful after
 upgrading the firmware.  I have now managed to boot into Ubuntu from the
 SD card and am currently in the process of applying post-install updates.

 Fwiw, prior to upgrading (with Q2E18), although I wasn't able to boot off
 of the SD card, in other respects as far as I could tell it was working
 okay.  I was able to untar the Ubuntu distribution to it, I could see the
 files via both the SD slot and a USB card reader, the filesystem fsck'd
 okay, and the dir command at the OFW prompt *did* work for me, unlike the
 original poster.
