 Tried looking with 'top'.  Tasks seemed normal.  When the system got its
 knickers twisted (for instance, on me manually relaunching Terminal after
 it had disappeared), three tasks which often were high on the 'top' list
 were python, Journal, and kswapd0.  The most noticeable (while the system
 was sluggish) was the 'system percentage' shown by 'top' - it never went
 below 50%, and when added to the percentages of the tasks resulted in 0%
 'idle' being shown by 'top'.
