 I think disabling the entry is a nice solution.  It's really the same
 entry, and the same toolbar, so hiding it completely wouldn't be the
 correct thing to do.

 I do question the clearing of the entry, which causes you to return to an
 unfiltered list view if you leave and come back.  However, Scott mentioned
 that this was on purpose, so that if kids accidentally filter the list (to
 no results) they could leave and return and find it "back to normal".  I'm
 OK with this argument and solution in the short term.  Clearly once we
 have a "No matching activities" message with a "Clear search" button next
 to it, we can restore the functionality of retaining the query in the
 disabled entry.
