 One frequent complaint that we've been getting about recent builds is that
 they destroy any library bundles that were in /usr/share/activities
 without a) moving them somewhere safe or better yet b) moving them into
 /home/olpc/Library .

 It might be enough for the updater to check whether the directory exists
 and move any library bundle directories into /home/olpc/Library before
 running the rest of the update.
