 I saw another case on Joe's machine, where the ESSID label on the AP icon
 wouldn't show up.  No tracebacks in the logs.  Joe thinks that it is
 related to overlapping icons, because in one case where icons were
 overlapped the palette would only show up in a narrow region between two
 almost-overlapped icons.

 I put the machine aside for a while, when I went back to it, the palette
 showed up, and there wasn't an overlap.  I can't say for certain whether
 the AP icon was originally overlapped when Joe first showed it to me.
