Comment(by Eben):

 As SJ noted, the new object chooser now allows one to sort/filter the
 list, which goes a long way to improving things already. We hope to
 improve it further by adding a favorites filter, to narrow down the list
 to the starred entries. It also supports looking on external devices for
 files as well. I also hope to add palettes to the entries, to provide
 previews and other details about them while looking through the list.

 I envision adding a view toggle from list to hierarchy for external
 devices. It might also be possible to later add this for the local
 filesystem as well, though I'd hesitate to do so until the datastore
 itself stores files in a manner that can be accessed from this view.

 You also mention the bundle dilemma, since right now there is no good way
 to access internals of bundles. We now have a group (a class) working on
 the ever-elusive Bundle activity, which will handle viewing and creating
 of bundles, and allow kids to move things into and out of them, and thus
 allowing them to place any wanted files into the Journal for future use,
 accessible from the object chooser.
