 > I was curious about this backup & restore of Journal items using USB.
So with my single XO I copied several items from my Journal to USB (using
drag & drop), then unmounted USB stick, unplugged it, then deleted
original items from my Journal, then replugged USB stick, then copied all
the items back to my Journal (using drag & drop), then unmounted and
unplugged USB stick, then tested all those items restored in my Journal.

as did a couple of alt-1 screenshots. A pdf ebook viewed okay in Read.
Activities Ruler.xo and Doom.xo launched okay. And activities Terminal
 and Log both resumed okay.

 > A couple of restored clipboard items did not produce sensical results
when I clicked on them. So most things transferred to USB and back worked
okay, but clipboard items need more study.

reproducing frances' problem with the transferred Record video.

could the fact that you are using the same XO in both cases be presenting
 the varying data?
