one reason this bug hasn't gotten more attention is because cjb and i have
had trouble reproducing it. this morning, following thomas' detailed
recipe in comment 33, my laptop (running 8.2-759) is still behaving
completely normally. i've tried a couple of times.
in the past i've been able to see the symptom (i.e., surprise dimming)
maybe once, and then it won't happen again.
perhaps there's something about the environment here at 1cc that's causing
a different ohm behavior. (e.g., active mesh? seems unlikely, but...)
