I'll attach a patch to fix this. The problem is that a transition between
the previous state of the shell, and the new one is started. (Will often
be home->home, but could be anything other combination.)
The patch adds a signal to the shell model, that emits when the zoom level
changes. The reason to add the signal is that it can pass the old zoom
level to the signal handler. The signal handler then knows the old zoom
level and can start the correct animation accordingly.
