 having talked through this with henry, we think it's at least possible
 that some of his symptoms might have been caused by the modern magic of
 multiple mountpoints -- i.e., if sugar had his SD card mounted at the time
 that he created his filesystem(s), this could explain a lot.  but this
 isn't definitively what happened.
