 of course, what we ''really'' want is for the backlight to always turn off
 when we close the lid.  i don't know if this suggests a simpler solution
 or not.  e.g., could the kernel always "wake" on lid-close, but only wake
 up "enough" to turn off the screen?  (i don't know if we have the ability
 to wake up only a little bit -- i'm picturing waking and going back to
 sleep all from within the interrupt handler.  not possible, perhaps.)
