 first, neither trigger is likely.

 on exec, close all unneeded file descriptors -- be generous, and keep the
 first, uh, 30 open.  that guarantees we don't close anything important,
 while also guaranteeing we won't run out.

 do the same thing after N consecutive failures to connect to the X server
 -- knowing that if we leak 2 per failed call to XOpenDisplay.

 (just ideas)
