Comment(by thomaswamm):

 Wow, I just experimented with a SanDisk cruzer micro 2.0 GB USB memory
 stick, and it's a lot faster, taking only 13 minutes to save-nand
 u:\my759.img which is about 551MB. The slow stick (90 minutes) is an
 LGear 2GB. Both were formatted as FAT32 using a WindowsXP PC. Both show
 up as USB2.0 using probe-usb in OFW. On the WinXP PC, the LGear stick
 needs about 3 times longer to receive an XO image file, compared to the
 SanDisk stick.

 So if I use a lucky USB stick, I can do coffee-break XO backups. I'm
 gonna go out and buy a 3-pack of Sandisk 2GB sticks, and leave them
 factory-formatted from now on.

 Thanks for the info, wmb. This ticket can be closed as far as I am
 concerned. I am thinking of trying to compose a wiki page about "How to
 back up your XO", if one does not yet exist.
