Comment(by morgs):

 book.tif crashed Read with "Insufficient memory to open TIFF file". The
 others had a less informative error message but in all cases the XO was
 observed to run out of memory.

 The tiffs worked fine with evince on Ubuntu on a laptop with 2GB RAM...
 I'll try to generate a multipage smaller tiff as your examples are all
 really huge images.
