 I'm not in a position to answer this.  I wrote ticket #7719 to document
 something I saw that I did not expect.  Have not in recent times
 experienced this problem.  [Saw an empty Journal only once since, but that
 may have been because something appeared in the search field (in the top
 edge of Journal) -- and a reboot restored proper behavior.]

 More to the point, I do *not* use the Journal myself.  Instead, I keep
 everything on a "permanent" SD card.  Basically, I could not run without
 the SD card - so I never do.

 Personally, I doubt that the presence/absence of an SD card has any effect
 on the ticket #7719 situation.

 [By the way, what I've noticed with Joyrides (and 8.2) in Aug 2008 is that
 my SD card shows up as an icon in the Journal screen bottom edge.
 Earlier, the SD card was mounted, but its icon did not show in Journal.]
