 i agree that the symptom is unusual.  our video hardware is somewhat
 different than the norm (e.g., the ability to remain on while the rest of
 the system shuts down), and the system seems to have unexpected side
 effects (read "bugs") as a result.  this may be one of those cases.
 (there are other video ghosting bugs that occur when switching from a VT
 to X that i suspect may have a similar root cause.)

 as chris noted, bugs related to VT operation do not currently have a high
 priority.
