Comment:

 I don't know what the cause is, but I'm getting the same symptoms with
 767.

 I'm doing olpc-pwr-log from the text console, which produces a series of
 output messages.  After a while, characters in those output messages are
 being replaced by blanks - giving the screen an appearance of "vertical
 stripes" of blank columns.
