The situation has shown up only in the last month where, if the
prerequisites for an Activity are not met, then upon launch the pulsing
times out and vanishes, leaving behind a log of length zero. This means
the user has __no clue__ as to why the Activity did not launch.

To answer morgs - yes, debug logging is enabled on my system. If I boot
with the /etc/olpc-security file present, both Etoys and Scratch run, and
leave a normal logfile behind. If I boot with the /etc/olpc-security file
absent, neither Etoys nor Scratch will launch - and both will leave behind
 a logfile of zero length.
