#8824: using hub for ethernet adapter prevents correct interface setup

 No wireless. When I plug my USB-ethernet adapter directly into the XO,
 ifconfig shows the IPv4 address assigned by the server on the ethernet
 (and I can ping other devices on the ethernet). When I plug my USB-
 ethernet adapter into a separate USB hub, what ifconfig shows appears to
 lack the ethernet interface. If I manually issue an ifconfig up with the
 proper IPv4 address, commands I type in get told "Network is unreachable";
 pinging of devices on the ethernet does not work.

 [Dumps were taken right after booting, to show ethernet not being set up
 (Joyride-2514; symptoms same with 8.2-767).]
