 I have not exercised my D-pad much, but yes, it does seem less than
 reliable. Potentially destructive menu choices would need a secondary
 confirmation dialog.

 Or the game-pad keys could be used instead for navigating menus; I use the
 game pad a lot and find it reliable.

 In menu mode, the D-pad and game-pad could provide the same function, then
 the user could use whatever works best for them.

 I suppose this idea really needs a rapid prototype demo. How long will it
 take me to learn how to program the XO?  Maybe I should start fiddling
 with Pippy.
