Comment:

 If the SD card or USB memory device have a lot of files on them, Sugar
 might need a long long time to index them.  You might try waiting for a
 few hours to see what happens.

 I'm thinking some kind of semi-automatic mechanism is needed to tell Sugar
 "Don't scribble on this external memory device!".  Perhaps if a directory
 like /.olpc does not already exist on the device, Sugar should ask first
 for permission to create that directory.
