Comment:

 I can get part of the way there by following the directions in
 http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Network_manager_0.7

 So far, running a simple mesh between three XOs (two of them 767 and the
 third 2532), I've been able to 'ping' to/from between any two of them.
 Call the NM 0.7 machine green. Call the two NM 0.6 machines blue and red.
 In Neighborhood View:  green sees red but not the 'Chat' icon red offers;
 blue sees red and its 'Chat' icon; red sees green and its 'Write' icon.

 I was able to start 'Write' on green and get red (but not blue) to
 collaborate (both green and red share the text being input to 'Write').
 Blue and red continue to 'Chat', but what is entered into 'Chat' at blue
 shows up at red with the color/name as if it had been entered by green
 (with which red does *not* have a 'Chat' collaboration). Go figure.

 ----

 Running wired ethernet on the NM 0.7 machine (without setting up the
 mesh), yum and wget etc., worked for me.
