 So there's a rather large amount of logs to look at here and I'm not sure
 looking at them manually will be of much use. The fundamental issues we're
 trying to solve if I understand correctly is why does
 /home/olpc/.sugar/default/config end up with root ownership so we need to
 reproduce that and capture useful data. What I would do is write a quick
 daemon script that installs an inotify watch for all accesses to this file
 and have it run at boot. Log the data to disk and as soon as we see an
 ownership change to root, do a full system log and sysrq-trace dump to
 disk and lock the system. At this point we have a full log of what has
 touched this file and what was happening when the ownership change
 happened.

 Now...start doing whatever you did on the busted laptops to create the
 scenario and hopefully there is a single path that leads to this.
