 frances -- you had two machines out of 5 exhibit this problem.  can you
 think of anything you might have done differently on these?  (olpc-update
 vs. copy-nand, choose colors or name vs just hit enter, update activities
 vs. no update, etc)

 you showed me a machine the other day on which the journal seemed inactive
 -- was that one of these machines that has the .sugar/default/config
 permissions problem?
