Comment(by mikus):

 2523. While testing Activities, did a deliberate lid close and reopen.
 As usual, after the resume eth0 no longer had its ethernet IPv4 address.
 I manually issued the following commands: 'ifconfig eth0 down'; 'ifconfig
 eth0 up 192.168.1.8' (this is what DHCP would assign to this machine);
 'route add default gw 192.168.1.1'. And on this occasion ethernet worked
 -- this is the FIRST time ever that I was manually able to re-establish
 the ethernet after suspend/resume.

 Not long afterwards (I started an additional Activity) the system became
 unresponsive - I tried 'top' and it showed .sy taking 96% of the CPU, but
 then 'top' became unresponsive as well - the only way I could get into my
 system was by rebooting. So I am *not* going to consider manual re-
 establishment of the ethernet to be a bypass for this ticket that can be
 relied upon (all my previous attempts at manual re-establishment always
 had resulted in the system telling me the ethernet was "unreachable").
