Several USB sticks were tried(which worked fine with other XOs)
 were veery slow to mount.

It showed the first set of messages:...

  [ 99.550922] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] 2037504 512-byte hardware sectors (1043
 MB)
[ 99.583661] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off

 ....
 waited for ~1min..
 and then:

[ 165.609040] FAT: utf8 is not a recommended IO charset for FAT
filesystems, filesystem will be case sensitive!

in most time the wait time was too long that it seemed it would never
 mount.

it happened with a handful of sticks
